2nd Trimester To-Do List

The middle months of pregnancy are probably the best ones to try and get most of the things you need done in. Usually by the second trimester the morning sickness and extreme tiredness has wore off at least a little bit and you haven't hit the third trimester yet where you are more likely to become increasingly uncomfortable and not as eager to be up and moving all the time. Here is a list of some of the things that I could think of that you might want to add to your second trimester to-do list.

Second Trimester To-Do List

Announce to family
They usually say around the beginning of the second trimester is the best time to announce to family and friends. Although timing is all up to you, many people choose to announce earlier or later in their pregnancy.

Prenatal tests
Blood work, Gestational diabetes test, for example, there are also a few more I have heard of but I can’t think of the names of.

Tell boss
After announcing to family and friends, you might decide to tell you boss and co-workers. Obviously they will find out eventually, and it never hurts to figure out your options for mat leave earlier rather than later.

Doctor visits
I can’t remember when you go from monthly appointment to every 3 weeks or every 2 weeks, I want to say around the end of the second trimester.

Start a baby registry
Stores such as Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, Sears and Macy’s usually you can create a registry at so that you can keep track of the things you want and have. Plus, friends and family can look at it to get ideas when shopping for a baby gift.

Buy a more supportive bra
By this point you may have gone up a cup size so getting fitted for a new bra should be on your to do list. You might change the style, look for something more supportive or without a wire to make you more comfortable.

Finish any home renovations
If you have any big renovations going on you might want to finish them up sooner rather than later so that you don’t have all the stress and commotion and can just relax before the baby comes.

Sign up for prenatal classes you plan to take
Such as lamaze classes, Bradley method, lactation classes, I’m sure there are more. These classes aren’t offered where I live so I can’t think of any others.

Have gender scan
Typically between 18-21 weeks unless you go for an elective gender scan earlier on.

Gender reveal
Many people do a cute photo shoot or have a party with friends and family to pop a balloon or cut into a cake filled with pink or blue.

Start thinking of names
Once finding out the gender, maybe even before finding out, or maybe even before getting pregnant you may have had some names in mind. As the pregnancy progresses you probably narrow down the names more and more if you haven't already decided on one.

Buy maternity clothes
By the second trimester you are probably starting to show or at least get a bit uncomfortable in your regular clothes. Sometime during these weeks you will probably pick up some new things to wear whether is is actual maternity clothes or just a larger size and maybe some more loose fitting clothing.

Start picking up baby stuff
If you haven’t already, some people wait until closer to the end or at least until after a baby shower to pick of everything they need. Others like to get the job done earlier on so that they don’t have to worry about it right before the baby comes, whichever works best for you.

Book 3D ultrasound
Depending on the place they may book up quickly especially if you want a specific day or time. Many places recommend between 24 and 32 weeks for the best pictures.

Start planning the nursery
You might have some moving around to do or painting to prepare the baby’s space, whether the baby stays in your room for the first year or so, they will be sharing with a sibling or have their own room. There is still some planning to do such as how to place the furniture, colors and where all the baby’s things will go.

Get a prenatal massage
Around where I live no place offers this, or not that I have heard of at least. However, I am sure many other places do especially bigger towns and cities. A massage or mani/pedi would be a great way to relax during pregnancy.

Start thinking about maternity leave
Many countries have different rules about the length of typically maternity leave. I don’t know about other places but in Canada it is 1 year. Some mothers wait until the last minute to go on leave and some take a month or so before the baby comes. Also, there is the option of the daddy taking time, every family is different.

Go on a babymoon
Down south or maybe a cruise or even just away for the weekend to relax. If you plan on flying or going on a cruise make sure you check the airline/cruise ship’s rules about being on board while pregnant. From what I’ve heard it is usually around 26-32 weeks that they don’t recommend or don’t allow pregnant women to go.
